5 rules of more efficient underwater orientation

Diving is beautiful, interesting, fascinating and surely dangerous. It is necessary to remain calm under water, properly execute all the operations and not get lost. The last one is quite difficult because every sportsman can have trouble in finding the way back. In this case staying calm is quite difficult. And to prevent this, one needs to know the basics of underwater orientation. It is the knowledge without which diving training would not be complete. So, what rules do you need to follow?

Rule No.1: learn the environment

Orientation should begin before going in the water. It is very useful to have special literature that describes the area. Maps are ideal for this. It is even more important if you do not dive together with your partner. One more option is diving off the rented boat. It is more convenient because in this case there is a supervisor that has valuable knowledge. It is important to listen to and remember everything that he says. Usually professionals tell about the depths and currents and help the sportsmen make a plan of actions. Definitely discuss all the key moments, mark the time or pressure to be the point of return. Thorough preparation to the process is half the success. Do not forget that before this stage is preceded by a process of checking the diving equipment for efficiency and wholeness.

Rule No.2: follow the guide

One of the divers has to act as a guide – in such case discipline and consistency are the best assistants. It is necessary to split the responsibilities: the guide leads the way and the other diver minds the distance, time and depth. This strict cooperation will prevent you from missing something important.

Rule No.3: choose your diving spot thoroughly

If we are talking about diving off a boat, than it should be done right in the place where the boat is anchored. When the place is chosen is should be reached on the water surface missing the waves. These simple rules work for absolutely all places including diving in Eilat or any other place.

Rule No.4: remember orienting points

Experienced diving trainers advise the beginners to pay more attention to the natural orienting points. These are objects that are fixed to one place and can later show the way: corals of different kinds, sand spots and rock formations. The key is not remembering the existence of an orienting point, but precisely memorizing its features and peculiarities. The more information you get on the way the easier it will be to find the way back.

Rule No.5: time estimation

If you properly plan the time and follow the above mentioned rules, you will not face any trouble. The time span, during which the diver swims off the initial spot, is determined beforehand. As soon as the time is up, the diver needs to turn around and swim backwards. In case of a current, it can be used in the beginning of the way. However this fact should be minded during time estimation of the time on the way back. Besides, divers mustn’t forget the golden rule of “the third”. It implies that one third of the air is spent on the way from the initial point, one third is spent on the way back and one third is spent on exploring the area around the boat as well as on decompression stops.

If you follow these simple rules than diving in Israel will be without any problems or stress. You will be able to fully enjoy the given opportunity and get loads of positive emotions.

What are divers afraid of?

Being under water is not the most typical state for a body and it requires lengthy adaptation. And if you add numerous fears and phobias that divers can have than enjoying diving is out of question.  At the same time some of the fears are quite reasonable and are the results of former experience or knowledge. However there are fears that are caused by the instinct of self-preservation. Only when you are well over these fears you are ready to buy a wetsuit and go to Eilat to practice diving, that AHLA DIVE center offers you.
Among the most common diver’s phobias are:
  • a fear of being in closed space
Claustrophobia that causes much inconvenience on dry land can be the reason for a panic attack under water. That in turn can cause a tragedy. Divers with a fear of being in closed space feel extremely uncomfortable in caves, narrow gorges or in hyperbaric chambers.
  • A fear of sharks
A fear of predators seems natural at the first sight, however it sometimes appears in the places where such creatures cannot be found including swimming pools.
  • A fear of darkness.
Fears that are more common with children can occur among adults with equal strength. Phobias are found frequently among divers because they are in an environment where not everything can be controlled and that is why they feel inconvenient.

To overcome those phobias and restore the ability to enjoy diving specialists first of all advise divers to realize that these are just groundless fears. Having realized that, a plunger will be able to take stressful situations much easier. Creating all conditions for safe diving will help you realize that it was all a mere fantasy. It is also necessary to always watch a diver’s breathing: it has to be steady and calm.

Secrets of saving air – secrets for beginner diver!

Problem of air consumption is familiar to most divers. In the following material you will find tips of its effective saving – useful and practical. Important: this material is aimed at beginners.
15 main tips for proper breathing under water
Diving – is not a competition but still everyone wants to keep their face in front of other team members. The skill of saving air is of great importance, it is taught during diving training courses but the practical part has to be learned on one’s own. Don’t be nervous – Rome was not built in a day you will have time for practice.
In the course of the next dive try to use the following tips:
  1. Trained breathing. Try to make pauses between inhaling and exhaling longer, but it doesn’t have to be too intense.
  2. Breathe as deep as you can. Inhale as though you are doing yoga.
  3. Become a mime. Move under water slowly, smooth as if on a slow motion video.
  4. Помогать руками в ходе плавания не требуется, в противном случае, невесомости не достичь.
  5. Don’t use hand while swimming, otherwise you won’t reach weightlessness.
  6. Work on mastering neutral floatation. Absolute stability is your goal.
  7. Keep horizontal position. Moving sideways leads to unproductive air usage.
  8. Improve streamlining of your equipment.
  9. The best diving is impossible without efficient pressure regulator.
  10. Save the oxygen in the cylinder.
  11. Don’t overload yourself
  12. Don’t freeze yourself, or else you will use more oxygen.
  13. Keep good physical form.
  14. Always improve your level. Learning – is a key to success.
  15. Use your fins properly. Less movements – more benefit.
  16. Don’t compete. Process is more important than winning.

Diver’s instruction, rules of using a wetsuit

You love diving and learned about it at first hand? Then you must have all the equipment that costs quite a sum of money. Do you want your equipment to serve you as long as possible? Then it is your job to exploit it properly: follow the service manual, check the wetsuit for defects regularly, pack all the equipment elements carefully, do not forget to rinse and dry everything after employment. You will find the rules of using a wetsuit below.
Before diving
Closely examine your wetsuit – there has to be no mechanical defects. Collapsed seams frequently part and it is unacceptable. It is better to cover zips with wax. Fractures on a dry suit found during a regular check can be the reason for a leak at the time of diving.
Mending of a diving wetsuit is possible but it can be done only by a professional. Check wetsuit valves: if you find leaks, use patches. All these activities are time consuming that is why it is important to check the equipment in advance, and not before the actual diving.
After diving
Rinse your wetsuit with warm water using a special shampoo (it protects the neoprene and protects color brightness) or in a gentle mode of washing machine. Carefully wring the wetsuit and wait till it dries. Proper washing, drying and regular checking will help you prevent many problems.
AHLA DIVE does not recommend:
-hanging a wet wetsuit on a hanger – shoulders can be torn
-putting neoprene in saunas and on heaters because it is rubber and it fractures.
